CoreCivic is constantly seeking opportunities to broaden program offerings to best prepare those in our care for a successful return to their communities. One of the more recent additions is a transformative program developed and offered by Jamal Jivanjee, a former correctional officer turned life coach and best-selling author.
"Jamal's approach was particularly interesting because it has a different flavor than many reentry programs where the curriculum comes from the perspective of a formerly incarcerated individual and offered only to those who are incarcerated," said Matt Moore, senior director of Reentry Services at CoreCivic. "His professional experience adds a unique perspective that benefits both the individuals in our care and our facility staff."
When Jivanjee visits CoreCivic's facilities, he shares his own journey of overcoming adversity and finding purpose through self-reflection and personal growth. He also shares his experiences of growing up in challenging circumstances and how he turned his life around by focusing on his inner strength and resilience. His message resonates deeply with residents, many of whom have faced similar struggles and are seeking a way to rebuild their lives.
"As a former correctional officer, I appreciate CoreCivic's holistic approach to genuinely treat every [resident] as an opportunity for a life reset," Jivanjee said. "I begin with an onsite presentation, emphasizing the concept that one's identity is not defined by their past experiences. While their story may have influenced how they are perceived, it does not define who they truly are."
Jivanjee's in-person visits are followed by a virtual six-week group coaching program for our participating residents. One of the key takeaways from his presentations has been the importance of mindset in the rehabilitation process. He emphasizes true change begins from within and encouraged those in our care to adopt a positive outlook and take responsibility for their actions. By shifting their mindset, Jivanjee has helped those in our care and staff to take the next step of breaking free from the cycle of negativity and create a brighter future for themselves.
Residents and staff at Hardeman County Correctional Facility and Whiteville Correctional Facility (both in Whiteville, Tennessee), Trousdale Turner Correctional Center in Hartsville, Tennessee, and Lake City Correctional Facility, in Lake City, Florida, have had an opportunity to participate in Jivanjee's program.
Participants agree the impact of his visits at each of those facilities has been positive. They reported feeling a renewed sense of hope and motivation to pursue personal growth and rehabilitation. Many expressed gratitude for the opportunity to hear Jivanjee's story and found his message to be a source of inspiration. Staff members also benefited from the presentation, gaining valuable insights into the challenges faced by justice-involved individuals and learning new approaches to support their rehabilitation efforts.
Future on-site events with Jivanjee are planned across CoreCivic. Additionally, Moore reports Reentry Services is moving forward to add his program to Go Further Discovery, as well as a live coaching session that will be included using the new LearnMax feature of Go Further Discovery.
