April is Second Chance Month and while CoreCivic celebrates every individual who has been released from our care and is now leading a successful life outside incarceration, we take time to spotlight what post-release can look like for formerly incarcerated individuals who are taking their second chance in life.
Sidney was released in 2024 from CoreCivic's Boston Avenue reentry facility in San Diego, California. While he was at Boston Avenue, Sidney began his studies to pursue a counseling degree. After earning his credentials, he was offered a job as a counselor at the nearby Heartland House, an organization that serves males who are in residential substance abuse treatment.
“What I like about this job is I get to help others. I always had a passion for helping others and sometimes in the past I would overextend myself to my own detriment," said Sidney. "Once I was introduced to this field, I knew that I had finally found a way to give a helping hand doing something I love.”
This is not the first time Sidney had devoted his time to helping others—he served four years in the United States Marine Corps before an honorable discharge.
This Second Chance Month, join CoreCivic in celebrating Sidney and all other individuals who are pursuing a second chance following incarceration.
