When Deb York entered the corrections field as a nurse, she did so with a background in long-term care, rehabilitation and clinical medicine. That was 15 years ago. Today, she works at CoreCivic's Central Arizona Florence Correctional Complex in Florence, Arizona, and says she truly enjoys helping people and providing health education to those reentering the community.

What is your favorite part of your job?

My favorite part of my job is preparing an inmate to leave. I make sure they have their medications and ensure they have identified a doctor to begin care on their own. I also answer any questions they might have about their health and the follow up care they may need.

Are there things the general public would be surprised to know about working in corrections?

Most people would be surprised to learn of the strict standards of care we adhere to. Our medical unit includes an infirmary with 24-hour care. We are truly a team and work together. I am proud to have such an amazing group nurses working alongside me.

How does your job support CoreCivic's reentry mission?

My job supports the reentry mission by providing continuity of care to individuals with the referrals and education needed to ensure their physical, mental, and emotional needs can be met when they go home.
