CoreCivic is not only dedicated to helping those in our care see their potential for growth and change, but we aim to prepare them for reentry at every step. CoreCivic provides programmatic opportunities through evidence-based educational and vocational programs. At many CoreCivic facilities, residents can also engage in hobbies and extracurricular activities, such as music and art.

In fact, the resident-comprised band at CoreCivic's Lake City Correctional Facility in Lake City, Florida, recently showcased their musical talent at the "Corrections Got Talent" competition, hosted by the Florida Department of Corrections. Lake City's band placed fourth among 17 participating bands.

CoreCivic's Lake City facility cares for young, male residents who are between 18 and 25 years old. Five residents, who play either piano, acoustic guitar, bass guitar, or drums, make up the band. Their renditions of "Stand by Me" by Ben E. King, "Beautiful Girls" by Sean Kingston, and "Demons" by Imagine Dragons earned them the fourth-place award.

With three weeks to prepare for the competition, Lake City staff shared how proud they were of what the band accomplished in such a time frame.

"It was a tough competition," said James Deal, warden at Lake City. "But our band really showed up and showcased their talent. We are all very proud of their achievement."

They also noted the Lake City band members were among the youngest in the competition, making their performance lively and memorable for both the judges and crowd.

Studies show music and instrument engagement positively influences a person's physical and mental well-being, including lifting their mood and improving their heart rate and motor skills. CoreCivic is committed to providing dignified care, while fostering a positive and safe environment for residents during rehabilitation.
