In 2017, CoreCivic announced the launch of a nationwide initiative to advocate for a range of government policies aimed at helping former inmates successfully reenter society and stay out of prison. It includes efforts to support “Ban the Box” policies, such as the Fair Chance Act, which was included in this year's National Defense Authorization Act, signed by President Trump on December 20, 2019.

After advocating for this measure with members of Congress, we were pleased and encouraged to see it signed into law. It will give people who have completed their prison sentence a better chance to secure employment by prohibiting the federal government and federal contractors from requiring job applicants to disclose criminal histories prior to the extension of a conditional offer of employment. CoreCivic has led by example in this area by removing a "check the box" for criminal history disclosure for applicable positions, in compliance with certain state and federal requirements
